چکیده

Algebraic Number Theory: • What is it? The goals of the subject include: (i) to use algebraic concepts to deduce information about integers and other rational numbers and (ii) to investigate generalizations of the integers and rational numbers and develop theorems of a more general nature. Although (ii) is certainly of interest, our main point of view for this course will be (i). The focus of this course then will be on the use of algebra as a tool for obtaining information about integers and rational numbers. • A simple example. Here, we obtain as a consequence of some simple algebra the following:

Math 254a: First Lecture

In this course, we will cover the basics of what is called algebraic number theory. Just as number theory is often described as the study of the integers, algebraic number theory may be loosely described as the study of certain subrings of fields K with [K : Q] < ∞; these rings tend to act as natural generalizations of the integers. However, although algebraic number theory has evolved into a s...

Units in families of totally complex algebraic number fields

Multidimensional continued fraction algorithms associated with GL n (Z K), where Z k is the ring of integers of an imaginary quadratic field K, are introduced and applied to find systems of fundamental units in families of totally complex algebraic number fields of degrees four, six, and eight. 1. Introduction. Let F be an algebraic number field of degree n. There exist exactly n field embeddin...

An algebraic framework for information theory: Classical Information

This work proposes a complete algebraic model for classical information theory. As a precursor the essential probabilistic concepts have been defined and analysed in the algebraic setting. Examples from probability and information theory demonstrate that in addition to theoretical insights provided by the algebraic model one obtains new computational and analytical tools. Several important theo...

On solving relative norm equations in algebraic number fields

Let Q ⊆ E ⊆ F be algebraic number fields and M ⊂ F a free oE -module. We prove a theorem which enables us to determine whether a given relative norm equation of the form |NF/E (η)| = |θ| has any solutions η ∈ M at all and, if so, to compute a complete set of nonassociate solutions. Finally we formulate an algorithm using this theorem, consider its algebraic complexity and give some examples.
